Gurriyan (Dolls)

Puppetry is an ancient tradition in South-Asian cultures. When we were kids, my mother was reminded of her childhood home when she saw this tradition carried out by my sisters and I when we played with our dolls. The only thing was, all the dolls didn’t look like us, they represented the foreign country she had come to, not her homeland. I created these six-layer hand screenprinted dolls as an homage to mama and her childhood memories. Each of them is named after one of my grandparents and their siblings.
