A Collective Dream
There is a ritual in Punjabi-Pakistani culture of gathering in community for the purpose of communal prayer, sometimes to bless a new home, or pray for someone who has departed this world. Instead of using prayer beads to pray on, date seeds are collected and dried to use as prayer beads and the participants gather in a large circle, praying over the seeds for whatever the decided purpose is. This project documents the power of collective dreaming, explores modes of desire, and records how the echoes of multiple voices resound over time vs just one person dreaming/wishing/praying. Exploring the power of physical manifestation and ritual in bringing dreams to life, this is a ritual practice that immigrant families have brought with us to our new homes.
